As they exercise their artistic talents, children will also learn that Baton Rouge, Louisiana's capital since 1849, is French for "red stick." This unusual name comes from the marker that once served as a dividing line for Indian tribal territory.

Sweetbay Magnolia - The Sweetbay magnolia, Magnolia virginiana, also called just Sweetbay, is a member of the magnolia family, Magnoliaceae. It was the first magnolia to be scientifically described, and is the type species of the genus Magnolia; as Magnolia is also the type genus of all flowering plants, this species can be seen to typify all flowering plants.

Mulan magnolia - Mulan magnolia Magnolia liliiflora, also known as Tulip magnolia or Lily magnolia, is a small tree native to southwest China (Sichuan, Yunnan), but cultivated for centuries elsewhere in China and also Japan. It was first introduced to English-speaking countries from cultivated Japanese origins, and is thus also sometimes called "Japanese magnolia", though it is not native to Japan.

Siebold's magnolia - Siebold's magnolia, (Magnolia sieboldii), also known as Oyama magnolia, is native to Japan and Korea. Siebold's magnolia is named after the German doctor Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796–1866).

Fraser magnolia - The Fraser magnolia (Magnolia fraseri) also called Mountain magnolia, Earleaf cucumbertree, or Mountain-oread, is a small, deciduous tree native to the southern Appalachians. It is a basal-branching, fragrant plant, with auriculate-lobed leaves and brown bark with a "warty" or "scaly" texture.
